165#

The latest accomplishment in my Bigger Stronger Faster mantra is hitting a milestone of 165# on my way to a target of at least 155#.  I would need some official records to verify, but I believe that this what I weighed in High school.  Keeping in mind that I'm also in much better shape now then I was in High School. I'm not sure how many people can say that.

Monday I went to the Jr's practice to row a single and practice my blade work and technique. I noticed win the quad that I was upsetting the set of the boat during my stroke, and it was leading to some poor handle height as well as other problems. Rowing a single allowed me to focus on finding where these problems are occurring, because it eliminates many of the variables, such as other rowers, having to keep in time, and the water in Jersey is much flatter.

I wound up having a great time rowing with the Jrs for two hours in the rain. Since their program is competative and coached thier practice is pretty intense.  There is also a veryign degree of skil.  There were a few rowers that I was definitly faster, others that gave me a challenge and a few that reminded me how much work I have left to do. On our last piece i made it 3/4 of the way down the 4.72K course before eventually beign run down by the quad and the double. I made it about 1/2-2/3 down the course before beign over taken by the fastest singles (they had a delayed start).  All in it was a great workout and  I had some raging blisters to show for it. Oh yeah and I moved up to a full blown 26' racing single, and kept it dry side up.

In order to row yesterday I ended up super gluing a couple of the blisters on my hand to avoid ripping them back open.  I'm undecided about whether this awas a great idea or not, however I didn't rip them open.  I also spent a signifigant amount of time working on my feather, rolling up early and using my fingers to feather the oars.

A few weeks ago we had a little 1,000 meter scrimage between a double and a quad.  It was the most intense row I had done to date, and it was well executed. We hauled ass. We lost our lead after a few bad strokes and lost our lead to the double. After we recovered we were over.  Video

I shared the video and pictures with my Dad amoung other people. My Dads response was fairly Douche-y.  Basically calling me a pussy for the blisters, and critizing that we didn't blow  away the double  in the quad.  Seeing how I   never rowed before last october and I'm keeping up with a couple former college rowers is pretty friging impresive. But I'm not doing this for him. I've offered several time to pay his tunition for learn to row, if he wants to show me how it's done.  So far he has yet to man up to my offer. So my response is put up or shut up!
